As Irene Tuazon in her blog said, COME TO THE PHILIPPINES! But what for ? I observe that Australians, Europeans and Americans refuse to visit the country and some due to negative publicities refuse to come due to:
· safety reasons – which the Philippine government should do something about
· unfriendly and corrupt people in the nation’s main tourism authorities – airport, custom, hotels, airline
· lack of that atmosphere where tourists are just being left alone to enjoy and explore the country and not being ripped off left right and center by the locals.
· Undeveloped tourist destinations
· Uncleanliness and lack of cultural sensitivity in most areas
So I thought the following five commandments should be observed and imposed if the Philippines is to become a tourist destination.
1. THOU SHALL BE POLITE AND FRIENDLY AT THE AIRPORT AND EVERYWHERE. I wish that people working in the airports (international and domestic) are more friendly, helpful, and professional. As to efficiency of traffic and flow in the arrival and departure areas, airport management should really learn from other countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Australia. Overseas contract workers should also get better treatment. They should also put a stop to the apparent airport mafia in the NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport). My experience was that due to the inefficient flow of passenger check-in, we were delayed and we missed our flight. And there was no contingency for passengers while on queue. There were so many people in their barong tagalogs and walkie talkies just walking to and fro like they were so busy – but no one was really helping. Being on the waiting list was the worst situation in NAIA, as you are being held captive by vultures who would only want to fleece you and fee you so you could get into your flight and out of the country. It is a classic case of shooing away tourists and I thought even Gen Douglas MacArthur, would say “I SHALL NOT RETURN”.
2. THOU SHALL DISPOSE OF YOUR GARBAGE RELIGIOUSLY AND PROPERLY. Local government down to the barangay and purok level should develop an effective and strictly imposed garbage collection, recycling and disposal system in all areas. Clare Danes’ negative comment about the Philippines being dirty and full of cockroaches I believe is true. Filipinos should develop sense of cleanliness and orderliness. Japan being so obsessed with cleanliness has 75 different recycle bins in every household and there are hundreds of instructions on proper disposals. I observed that there is no recycling rules in the Philippines and people sometimes dump their uncollected garbage in vacant lands and sometimes in the rivers and swamps. Not realizing that whatever garbage you throw out will ultimately come back to you. Even if the Philippines should remain to be a third world country – it could still be great by becoming a clean, environmentally and ecologically friendly one, I believe this can be done even without billions of budget as everyone can contribute towards this by just one action – stop littering! With its rich natural resources, I believe that Philippines has a great potential to become the next tourist destination in Asia next to Bali and Phuket. We just really need to clean up!
3. THOU SHALL RECYCLE YOUR RESOURCES. Here in Australia, recycling has been done ages ago to preserve its resources. This should be done in the Philippines as well. One good example the Philippines should adapt is to use reusable green bags in groceries and shopping centers instead of plastic bags.
4. THOU SHALL TREAT TOURISTS AS YOUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS AND HOME VISITORS WHO WOULD RETURN AGAIN. Therefore, people should stop and avoid fleecing tourists with extravagant prices. I really noticed that everyone from drivers, stall holders, and people on the street stare and then act like vultures when they see foreigners. Maybe because the Philippines is not used to foreigners coming in the country! But then things should change once the country starts seeing white people just walking on the streets, markets and public areas. Tourist would soon get tired of just going to touristy areas like Boracay and Puerto Galera, and they would like to observe and taste the ordinary life in the provinces. Not all tourists have the money to spend in 5 star hotels. Some would just survive on backpacking and bed and breakfasts. So these are areas to be improved on. Like Thailand, Hongkong and other countries in Asia.
5. THOU SHALL GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL FILIPINO CULTURE AND INCORPORATE THESE INTO ALL LEVELS. I do not mind Filipinos wearing their Barongs and Maria Claras in schools,.works, social events and graces, etc. I also do not mind really emphasizing the Mano Pos, the po and opos, bibingka, suman at puto, lechon. The colourful jeepneys should really be preserved. Develop cultural practices and awareness among the people and create a recurrent showcase for tourism.

1. Everytime I go home, I always have a bad experience in NAIA and I dont see smiling faces in that place. Is it just me? I dont know how they treat our tourists though.
2. and 3. Garbage. How to deal with it? Remains a plan, never implemented. Australia taught me how to recycle when I was there but i cannot do that in the Philippines. Garbage is garbage no matter if it is recyclable or not.
4. All I can say is, treat tourists, local or foreign, equally.
5. This is my favorite among your five commandments. I encounter a foreign friend telling me that he didnt enjoy the Philippines as much as he did in other Asian countries because Philly has NO IDENTITY. He said we are too westernized. I just dont get that but in his eyes our country is a mix of everything. He’ll rather go back to Burma to see the Pagodas than the Philly.
He is right to some extent. We dont have our own Architecture that is truly Filipino. Our food is mostly like Chinese and Spanish; American Hip Hop and R&B played in most tourist places. etc. The Philippines, in general, is not too exotic for him.
Well, I cannot think of anything that is truly Filipino right now but the Jeepneys, Balut, and Grace Nono. Ching!
Great commandments Jase!
They may be implemented by the Government in the future, who knows.
(:
But still, I’m going to Pinas in December and noh, I cannot wait. I’m getting too excited naman! Hahaha!
I still believe that Pinas is a beautiful country even though I have yet to step my feet on the ground and to breathe the air there … I don’t know why, I just find it amazing.
Maybe I’m weird?
There is a lot of truth in what you said, Jase. This entry should be posted in its entirety at pinoyblog.com for every member to read.
i love these commandments hahaha pahiram naman at maipost sa balikbayanbox ko hehehe
i agree with most of the points you raised except for the last one. our country is beautiful given its natural beauty and its rich history. our architecture is UNIQUE IN ASIA. Our food, despite the eclectic mix, is still UNIQUELY Filipino. When you get down to it, you can say we are neither really Asian despite being in Asia and neither are we western despite the western influences. We continue and absorb the BEST from our influences and that’s why taking a trip to the Philippines is worth it, the FILIPINOS make it worthwhile.
yes1 The impact of arrival at any airport -International or domestic in the Phils is appalling
And,if you stay beyond 21 days you are fleeced by the government by vicious visa extension charges-and-by the way-classified as an “Alien”-subject to reporting to The Alien Registration Bureau of Dept of Immigration
Thanks a lot!! Non Philipinos are from outer space as far as the government is concerned!!!
Tells All as far as where they are coming from is concerned(fleece the rich foreigners)-no different to street vendors!
However i love the friendliness and happy attitude of ordinary people there-i find them very positive about foreigners. By far the frienliest of Asian peoples.

——> Why do we have this common experiences! It is really bad! When it is only one or two people ocmplaining it must just be an exception but when there are more than 100 people complaining there should really be something wrong with the people in NAIA. Do you think we should write a petition for bloggers to sign on regarding this???

—–> You are right. In the Philippines, we really do not recycle! Everything are thrown as garbage. No wonder we have grown those SMOKEY MOUNTAINS too easily
The government should really make this a priority! Well they could not curb out corruption and rebellion, so the easier project to tackle is just GARBAGE DISPOSAL
That should jsut be easy!

———-> Sad to say, this is just the feedback among my Ozzie friends as well. It is so sad to know this being a true blue Filipino. And I really care
That’s when it hurts much :0 So we should really be serious about improving our homecountry, diba?

—-> We shoudl think and write about this
@ KYELS
Give me your feedback when you see the Philippines. It would be interesting to know. Are you going in December?
@ ERIC
That is a good idea :0
@ AYEZA
Thanks for thinking that it is. I have not really thought about it and I wrote it without editing – so the post was not really well written. But thanks that people like you have the same thoughts on this.
@ JAS
You have thought further and improve on my thought on this aspect. The Philippines is more Western than any other Asian countries – and we have adopted a lot of things from Spain Americans, Chinese and incorporated these into our basic culture. This is the Philippines that we know of and yes, foreigners may not like us that much – but that is who and what we are. One Ozzie said we are very close to the Mexicans, and the comparison was said somehow in derogatory manner.
@ MAURICIO
Thanks for your comments and feedback on this. Very well appreciated. So your experience is also mixed: friendliness, corruption, etc.
My question is: Do you like coming back to the Philippines. Why and why not?
Much like saying that Malaysia and Singapore has no identity too. Chinese, Malay, Indian. Nothing indigenously Malaysian or Singaporean. Hey Thai culture is a mixture of Indian and Chinese. Vietnam is highly sinicized…
Thailand is not even “unique”… Pretty much the same as Cambodia and Burma..a little of Vietnam
We are not alone.
But then again, what IS the prehispanic Filipino culture. Remember that even the word Filipino refered to those of SPANISH descent born in the Philippines.
The problem here is not the “incorporated” culture we have. It’s how we practice it.
Why is it that a Bangladesh guy who graduated from a local college in Manila can’t secure a job in Manila?
I am a local graduate here in Manila. I also have a 7 years working experience in my own country and also Malaysia. I recently attended 14 interviews here in the Philippines , I did qualify in 70% of them but was told “they dont hire Bangladesh”…..any answers to this weird phenomenon?

I have already visited DOLE ( department of labor ) and they have asked me to secure JOB OFFER and contract first before they can issue me a DOLE ID. After I secure the DOLE ID I am to go to immigration and apply for a WORKING VISA, the companies are not willing to hire me cause of my nationality not cause they dont have a vacant post or I can’t blend in with the culture. I look half filipino and have a filipina girlfriend too! My educational background is O-A levels from London University so you can imagine English is not a factor here.
