CONGRATULATIONS to Karla Paula Henry of the Philippines for winning the Miss Earth crown for Asia. Finally, Asia is represented!!!!

It was Miss Philippines’ night even before the announcement of the top 4 when she nailed the swimsuit and parading in a beautiful gown which is entirely different from her prelim gown. Her answer in the final question sealed her to the Miss Earth title. I personally was rooting for Miss Tanzania but she over-extended her answer to the question and lost her composure. Indeed, Karla gave the best answer that night. A well deserved win for the Philippines! OMG it’s like a Denise Quinones flashback when she won the Miss Universe crown at her native Puerto Rico.

Can you describe yourself and your background?

One thing that can best describe my self is a word EARTH each letter will represent the characteristic that I possess E-nergetic, A-pproachable, R-eliable, T-alented and H-ospitable. Energetic in a way of accomplishing my duties, Approachable to all my countenance, Reliable in pursuing or realizing the dreams of a concern Filipino in making/keeping the GREEN Earth, Talented to attract other people from different countries and Hospitable for it is the best Filipino Traits known in the world. And I would like to be an instrument to every woman who believe in their own ways.

What are your preparations for the upcoming Miss Earth?

I believe winning the Miss Earth title need not to have that much preparation, because the significant on it is not the preparation you have to win the title but is what you have done for the Earth before the pageant night. That is why I prefer to spend much time in solving an environmental issues, visiting and helping other countries in Asia who have environmental problems, spreading words about the ways on how to help the planet in our own ways. And if I win the title it is because I deserve it but if I lose at least I’ll be able to contribute my capabilities in order to keep the Earth a better planet to live in.

What is your environmental slogan?

BASURA MO LINIS MO!!! (Be responsible for your own trash) that would be my environmental slogan… It is simple yet powerful and I am sure everybody can do this.

Of all the elements of the Earth: Fire, Water and Air, which element are you most likely to associate with and why?

WATER because this will connect every country in the world, the sea touches the Philippines is the same sea in other countries. I believe water symbolizes life because a wave in the ocean will represents people’s trials, a calm water will represents human’s satisfactions, a water in the river will represents love for no one can stop its flows.

Aside from its environmental platform, what makes Miss Earth different from other pageants like Miss World and Miss Universe?

For me, Miss Earth is so realistic in terms of commitments, the duties that you have as a reigning Miss Earth is for life time, because as long as you live in this Earth you are part of it, and you have still role for it .. The Miss Earth title is indeed remarkable.

In your country what are the major ways it does to protect or improve the environment?

Educating people is still the best way in order to protect and inprove the environment.

Any message to Woman of the Earth Forum?

A woman must love Nature for its never fails you. A woman must take courage and strength from all the elements of the Earth for the Earth called as MOTHER Earth because it is dedicated to the women of Earth. Therefore, we must be the first to take care of it, we must be a role model to the people of the world and we must be an instrument in protecting the planet earth.

Thank you very much to Miss Philippines, Karla Paula Henry and Ferdinand Abejon for the photos.

WHO IS DAYANA MENDOZA ?

15 07 2008

The world would know that Dayana Mendoza is the Miss Universe 2008.

But who is she?

Apart from what is mentioned about her in the official Miss Universe site, we do not know much about the new queen. A Wikipedia article states that she was a teenage model with Elite Model Management and that she has modeled for big designers like Versace and Roberto Cavalli who, by the way, was one of the judges. We also know that she was express-kidnapped for one day and then released. But we don’t know anything about her family, her educational background, or anything else. They just crowned a mystery woman. I’d like to know the details about her kidnapping. – Critical Beauty.

Photos of Dayana before she was crowned  Miss Venezuela (click to enlarge).

I must admit that I am beginning to really like Dayana.  I think among the candidates (viewing their interview video) she has that almost charismatic personality – she has excellent communication skills using her eyes, face and body!

The following is a translation of the video from a US Forum:

Dayana comes from a very normal but very close family… She lives in a small 2-bedroom apartment in which they all share one same bathroom with five other family members (I guess her parents and siblings… She’s a normal person like so many of us; also comments that for winter time, they never get cold because of so many people in a small place like her home. She had to leave Venezuela when she got signed by Elite Model Management at 15 years old, so she came to the US by herself at that age and has also been in several parts of Europe.

She does admit that working since such a young age instead of finishing school with her classmates and friends as it is supposed to is very different and difficult, but she couldn’t do that because she started working since very young. Her grandmother died of cancer for fear to say what was happening to her. Her family didn’t have the money or resources for doctors or medical treatment. She let it get worse and when they all found out, there was no remedy.

When she was a kid, her grandma told her she could one day be Miss Venezuela, so when she was crowned, she felt her grandmother’s presence in el Poliedro de Caracas. Because of this, she now works with SenoSalud (an organization that works to create awareness about breast cancer in Venezuela). She enjoys and appreciates working with them because she wants people to know that having breast cancer doesn’t mean one has to die because it is something that can be cured.

1st Runner-up – Miss COLOMBIA

Miss Universe 2008 is…

Miss VENEZUELA!!!

DAYANA MENDOZA

As I said before, I love her character (a bid of a comediane) … SHE IS FIERCE (as in PIERCED!) and she will do everything to WIN this pageant, including piercing her nose above !!!  Expect a lot of dramatics from this girl :)    The audience just loves her!   She has that girly naughty look in her eyes – which she uses a lot.

There is really nothing written about Dayana’s background except that she was a victim of a one day kidnapping in Venezuela.

She looks like the next bride of Donal Trump above :)

And the master of hystreonics / dramatics / hysterics !!!

Parang naging loka loka sya above… O ano ?  Kaya nyo toh?

GOODLUCK ADOBO !!!

11 07 2008

One of my favorite filipino food is really Adobo – whether it is chicken, pork or even kangkong!

I think again it is an acquired taste – because other nationalities would not really love or even try to eat Adobo.  There are only be very few who would eat it and only because their wives are Filipinas who cook adobo everyday :)

Aside from the fact that it is just plainly pure meat (fats and ribs included) that turned dark dark brown (because of the soy sauce) and with the mixed aroma of ginger, soy sauce, garlic, vinegar and even brown sugar - is not really very attractive at first glance - just like all the other pinoy dishes (dinuguan, etc).  It is a very easy - lazy cooking – as you can just throw everything together and presto – you got adobo!

Adobo is plain and simple food that is best eaten (served) with rice.  Nothing fancy, complicated or exotic about it (like Thai food for instance).   But to the Filipinos – it is just a very satisfying and filling recipe.  It is plainly boiled food that speaks a lot about Filipino culture – very unassuming and down-to-earth!

Thanks to Jennifer Barrientos, our candidate for the Miss Universe for once again bringing to the world’s attention (perhaps) this authentic pinoy cuisine!  Well, at least.

But some of her detractors (a lot of them pinoys themselves)  have even gone further by making fun of her in some of the forums with the following creative expression !!!

Well, it is true that she might not be what they want her to be – or expected her to be – but that is reality and Filipinos and the Philippines would be represented by her in this pageant.

Jennifer as what she said – is plain and simple ADOBO.    People who would love her because of who she is – plain and simple.   The world would not appreciate and love her – but some pinoys would. Maybe an acquired taste – but that’s real.

So I would just wish the best for her this weekend and hope that when she comes back home to the Philippines she would have all her time to feast on plenty of pork Adobo with plain rice… hmmm, yummy!

I guess too that  I will be eating Adobo this weekend !!!

The following photo and added text (lampoon if you may!) was taken from a forum which was obviously made and posted by a pinoy in a latina/mexican forum gaining mixed reactions from the readers …
