WHO IS DAYANA MENDOZA ?
15 07 2008The world would know that Dayana Mendoza is the Miss Universe 2008.
But who is she?
Apart from what is mentioned about her in the official Miss Universe site, we do not know much about the new queen. A Wikipedia article states that she was a teenage model with Elite Model Management and that she has modeled for big designers like Versace and Roberto Cavalli who, by the way, was one of the judges. We also know that she was express-kidnapped for one day and then released. But we don’t know anything about her family, her educational background, or anything else. They just crowned a mystery woman. I’d like to know the details about her kidnapping. - Critical Beauty.

I must admit that I am beginning to really like Dayana. I think among the candidates (viewing their interview video) she has that almost charismatic personality - she has excellent communication skills using her eyes, face and body!
The following is a translation of the video from a US Forum:
Dayana comes from a very normal but very close family… She lives in a small 2-bedroom apartment in which they all share one same bathroom with five other family members (I guess her parents and siblings… She’s a normal person like so many of us; also comments that for winter time, they never get cold because of so many people in a small place like her home. She had to leave Venezuela when she got signed by Elite Model Management at 15 years old, so she came to the US by herself at that age and has also been in several parts of Europe.
She does admit that working since such a young age instead of finishing school with her classmates and friends as it is supposed to is very different and difficult, but she couldn’t do that because she started working since very young. Her grandmother died of cancer for fear to say what was happening to her. Her family didn’t have the money or resources for doctors or medical treatment. She let it get worse and when they all found out, there was no remedy.
When she was a kid, her grandma told her she could one day be Miss Venezuela, so when she was crowned, she felt her grandmother’s presence in el Poliedro de Caracas. Because of this, she now works with SenoSalud (an organization that works to create awareness about breast cancer in Venezuela). She enjoys and appreciates working with them because she wants people to know that having breast cancer doesn’t mean one has to die because it is something that can be cured.
